The Zebra’s auto insurance data methodology

The Zebra’s Dynamic Insurance Rating Tool for home and auto insurance rates utilizes the latest ZIP code-level rate filings from across the U.S., sourced from Quadrant Information Services and S&P Global. These filings, typically updated annually or biennially by insurers, are verified through Quadrant’s QA process and then integrated into The Zebra’s estimator.

The displayed rates are based on a dynamic home and auto profile designed to reflect the content of the page. This profile is tailored to match specific factors such as age, location, and coverage level, which are adjusted based on the page content to show how these variables can impact premiums.

Does auto insurance get cheaper as cars age?

Though the costs may come down somewhat over time, higher-value cars tend to cost more to insure regardless of their age. This is due mostly to the high cost of parts which are often made of premium materials and made in lower quantities than those for mainstream vehicles. Additionally, proprietary technology and high-performance features often require more extensive training to work on leading to higher labor costs.

That being said, if you have your heart set on owning one of these premium vehicles, one of the easiest ways to save on car insurance is to spend less upfront. A used model often has both a lower purchase price and cost to insure. Below, compare rate depreciation for the top 10 most expensive vehicles to insure and decide if you're willing to sacrifice that new car smell for auto insurance savings:

INSURANCE RATES — NEW vs. USED MODELS
Rank Most Expensive New 1 Year Rate 5 Year Rate
1 BMW i8 $ 4,302.76 $ 3,892.71 $ 3,525.25

Frequently Asked Questions

The most expensive car to insure is the Maserati Quattroporte, with an average premium of $5,024 annually or $419 per month.

Because your rate is a reflection of you and your vehicle, it's crucial to compare quotes from multiple insurers. Also, check to see if you qualify for bundling, multi-policy, occupation-related, and safe-driving discounts. While these discounts may appear modest on their own, their cumulative impact can be significant.

Insurance costs for older luxury and high-performance vehicles are generally less than those for brand-new models; however, they still tend to be higher than most mainstream car models thanks to higher parts and labor costs for repairs.
