The Zebra’s Dynamic Insurance Rating Tool data methodology

The Zebra’s Dynamic Insurance Rating Tool for home and auto insurance rates utilizes the latest ZIP code-level rate filings from across the U.S., sourced from Quadrant Information Services and S&P Global. These filings, typically updated annually or biennially by insurers, are verified through Quadrant’s QA process and then integrated into The Zebra’s estimator.

The displayed rates are based on a dynamic home and auto profile designed to reflect the content of the page. This profile is tailored to match specific factors such as age, location, and coverage level, which are adjusted based on the page content to show how these variables can impact premiums.

For a comprehensive understanding, see our detailed methodology.

What types of coverage does Amica offer?

Amica offers typical auto insurance options such as liability (both bodily injury and property damage), comprehensive, collision and uninsured motorist coverage. However, a number of Amica's options go beyond the basics. Amica prides itself on offering coverage options that aren’t widely offered by other major carriers. Have a look at the list below.

  • Gap insurance: This protects you in the event of a total loss on your lease or financed vehicle. Amica will cover the difference between the value of your vehicle and what you still owe on the loan.
  • Full glass coverage: While this varies by state, in most cases this coverage fully covers costs related to repair or replacement of your windows or windshield. It also eliminates the deductible for any damage costs.
  • Roadside assistance: Amica can provide help should you find yourself facing car trouble. This includes towing, jump start, fuel delivery and more.
  • Rental reimbursement: This coverage covers the cost of a rental car should you be involved in a crash. While coverage varies by state, most policies are able to cover rental costs up to $20 per day, up to a total of $600. Learn more about rental car insurance.
  • Rideshare/delivery coverage: This optional add-on offers extended protection if you drive for Uber, Lyft, Grubhub, Doordash and other passenger transportation networks or product delivery services.

Real-life customer experience

To help readers get even more insight into the Amica customer experience, we contacted actual customers of Amica to hear their thoughts. Below is what a real-life Amica customer had to say.

Carrie

Quick facts:

  • Customer for over 20 years
  • Also has homeowners and umbrella coverage through Amica
  • Has filed auto and homeowners claims

Q: How do you feel about the coverage level they provide, your monthly premiums, and the overall level of customer service provided?

A: Amica has excellent coverage with many options. The customer service is exemplary. If I choose to communicate by phone, a knowledgeable and professional representative is always readily available. They always follow up promptly as promised and never try to "pull one over on me." This sort of customer service is a rarity in the marketplace today.

The premiums are definitely not the lowest in the marketplace; however, the service — they pay out claims promptly and go above and beyond expectations — is worth it. For me, I'd rather pay a little more in premium to have the comfort and security of knowing that if I ever have a huge claim, Amica will take care of us!

Q: Have you ever filed a claim? If so, how would you rate the experience?

A: We have been Amica customers for over 20 years and have made several auto and homeowners claims. They always exceed my expectations, and I have none of those nightmare "loophole" stories that my friends tend to have with other carriers. For example, on a homeowner's roof claim due to hail damage, we had 50% of the roof damaged as did our neighbors. Amica replaced our entire roof without any special request from us. Our neighbors, on the other hand, were offered only 50% of a new roof by their insurance company. In our 20 years of membership, I have never had a problem with a claim or receiving coverage that was less than I thought fair. As a matter of fact, the claims process is usually beyond my expectations.

Amica insurance review: Summary

Amica has lots of great features for the average driver. With competitive rates, extensive coverage options and a strong customer satisfaction rating, it seems that it goes above and beyond to take care of its policyholders. If you are looking for other coverage types, such as home, renters or life insurance, the company could also deliver. In short, The Zebra highly recommends Amica for drivers who live in a covered state.

Methodology — how The Zebra reviews insurance companies

The team of insurance experts at The Zebra considers the company's standing in five main categories to come up with an overall rating. These metrics are weighted according to importance and are detailed below:

  • Price (20%): Using the base profile detailed below, we compared the company's average rate with the national average. If it surpassed this average, we gave a lower rating; if it fell below, we awarded a higher rating.
  • Coverage (20%): The highest-scoring companies offer a variety of coverage options, including bundling options, roadside assistance, telematics, beyond-basic coverage levels, and a variety of other coverage types.
  • Customer service (30%): We averaged ratings from JD Power, the NAIC complaint index to come up with a rating for the company's customer service. In instances when a company is not rated, we may use alternative rating agencies such as the Better Business Bureau and Trust Pilot.
  • Financial strength (10%): We use AM Best to determine a company's financial standing. In some cases when a company is not rated by AM Best, we may use an alternative measure such as Demotech.
  • The Zebra's Customer Satisfaction Survey (20%): The Zebra conducts an annual survey measuring customer satisfaction for many of the top insurance companies with the goal of ranking both the best auto insurance companies and best home insurance companies. Read more below.

For our auto insurance review, we analyzed more than 83 million insurance rates spanning every U.S. ZIP code using a sample user profile: a 30-year-old single male driver with a Honda Accord, good credit and full coverage at these levels:

  • $50,000 per person/$100,000 per incident for bodily injury liability
  • $50,000 per incident for property damage liability
  • $500 deductibles for collision and comprehensive coverage

For our home insurance review, rates are based on a sample user profile: a 45-year-old married homeowner living in a 2,500-square-foot single-story home built in 2011 with these coverage levels:

  • $200,000 for the dwelling
  • $20,000 for other structures
  • $100,000 for personal property
  • $100,000 for personal liability
  • $1,000 deductible

These sample premiums are dynamic and automatically refresh whenever the newest data is made available.

To generate pricing for particular rating factors, we adjusted this profile based on common pricing factors used by major car insurance companies. These factors include credit score, coverage level and others.

For The Zebra's Customer Satisfaction Survey, findings are based on an online quantitative survey of 4,134 current U.S. auto and home insurance customers, with Census-balanced sampling by age, gender and region. Categories with n=<20 responses are considered insufficient sample size and are not reported. This survey was developed by The Zebra and executed by independent research firm Maru/Blue in 2023.

Other people are also asking...

Should I get my insurance company involved or pay for the damage myself if I backed into a tree?

Ultimately it will depend on your deductible and the extent of the damage. Unfortunately, backing into a tree will be considered an "at-fault" accident if you file a claim with Amica. Our most recent State of Insurance report shows that at-fault accidents increase rates by about $450/year…
