Question

Can I get a refund if I was double insured?

I switched my insurance to go with AAA and got my own policy, but my husband was also with AAA, and his agent added me to his policy. He insured my car under his policy to get a multi-policy discount, but I was charged for my own policy (all for the same car!). Will I be able to cancel my other policy and get a refund since we paid double insurance on the same vehicle?

Thanks for reaching out to The Zebra! I can see how this is confusing for you.

Now, it's normal for other drivers to be listed on a policy if they live in the same house as the insured and could possibly drive their car, but insurance laws prohibit someone from having duplicate car insurance coverage. This means you can't have yourself and your vehicle insured on multiple policies. Insurance companies are required to refund you if this happens.

If you're in this situation, the best thing for you to do would be to forward a copy of the insurance policy that you'd like to keep to the company you wish to cancel your policy with. I would also call that company to check their specifics for canceling a policy (or directly call the agent you worked with when you set up your policy). It might be a slight inconvenience to deal with but should get things handled so this doesn't happen again. They will likely request your proof of insurance (ID Cards or Declarations Page) to cancel your policy and get a refund for whatever dates you had duplicate coverage.

A multi-policy discount is a great option for the future, though, if you decide to combine policies at some point. This can potentially save both you and your husband money and make things a little simpler overall if you've got the same agent and company, such as AAA. There are a lot of discounts out there that many drivers aren't aware of, so be sure to research and ask an agent if you're eligible for any of these money-saving opportunities.

It's also a good idea to get new car insurance quotes every six months, or if any major life events have happened (marriage, important birthdays, a new address, etc). You can always call our agency at 1-888-255-4364 to get personalized quotes and compare them to your current coverage. I hope this helps!

Why didn't my insurance company give me a defensive driving discount for completing the course?

Discounts vary by company, state, and situation so there is no guarantee that a carrier will provide a discount just from completing the course. Can I get car insurance without a home address?

Unfortunately it seems like you are in a tough spot until you have moved into your new place.
